Normally the flights from Europe (Martinair and Iberia via Miami) arrive later than 5 pm. From the airport to San José it is approximately 17 km. A taxi will cost about 12 US$, to the closest town of Alajuela (3 km), it will be 2 to 3 US$. Also public bus trips to San José and Alajuela leave every ten minutes.The bus stop is behind the parking building. In Costa Rica you can pay only with US-Dollars or Colones. Therefore it is recommended that your primary currency is US-$. Like in the other countries near the equator, it is already dark around 6 pm. Therefore you should reserve your accommodation for your first night in advance.
